This snack review has Jelly Belly Monster Mash Jelly Beans, Lay’s Wavy Funyuns Onion Flavored Chips, Witch’s Brew KitKats, Walmart Bakery Triple Chocolate Tres Leches Cake, and Pepperidge Farms Soft Baked Charleston Birthday Cake Cookies.
For this weeks snack haul, the overall sentiment was… meh. Nothing was terrible but there were no champions either. Out of all of these, the marshmallow flavored Witch’s Brew KitKats were my favorite and something I look forward to every year around the holidays. And even though I didn’t rate this the lowest, the Walmart Tres Leches was almost offensive at what they did to it—only using one milk, really?!
Jelly Belly Monster Mash Jelly Beans
Score: 5.5 / 10
For the most part, most of these taste like they’re advertised. The one that wasn’t good and weird was the caramel corn flavor, the others though, were mostly spot on although artificial tasting. None were too sweet either. I liked the variety but they need to fix the caramel corn!
According to some online sources, this appears to have been released around early fall 2022 for the Halloween season. Found at Stop & Shop.
Witch’s Brew KitKat
Score: 7.5 / 10
I always look forward to these KitKats every holiday! They’re Sweeter than the regular KitKat and instead of being wrapped in chocolate, these have a green vanilla marshmallow cream. This marshmallow doesn’t taste exactly like marshmallow but it’s close enough. Combined with the wafer center, these almost have s’mores vibes.
Released fall 2020 for the Halloween season alongside Franken-Cups and Vampire Kisses. These have come back every year since.
Lay’s Wavy Funyuns Onion Flavored Chips
Score: 6.5 / 10
Funyuns have a strong onion taste and compared to these, there’s no comparison: these chips are much less strong and won’t offend those picky to onion flavors. The onion flavor is there but it’s evenly mixed in with the potato as well. The texture is that of typical Lay’s Wavy chips, thick and a bit crunchier than regular chips.
Walmart Bakery Triple Chocolate Tres Leches Cake
Score: 6 / 10
This is not tres leches, this is offensive. It really does seem like they used only whole milk to drown the cake, making it a complete soggy soupy mess. The top layer is fairly sweet milk chocolate mousse with little slightly crunchy bits of chocolate. The bottom half is dark chocolate cake completely overly bathed in plain tasting milk. It’s way too soggy and bland, nothing like a real tres leches that has different milks and flavors.
I’m not sure when this was released although the latest reviews date back to some time in 2022.
Pepperidge Farms Soft Baked Charleston Birthday Cake Cookies
Score: 6.5 / 10
A pretty thin, fairly sweet sugar tasting cookie. Even though the package says “Birthday Cake”, any vanilla birthday cake was mostly overshadowed by the sugary taste, though, interestingly, despite a sugary taste, it wasn’t overly sweet either, it was just missing more pronounced flavors. The texture was fairly moist and soft, reminiscent of an underbaked cookie
Released in March 2023. These were inspired by Charleston, South Carolina’s Rainbow Row.
