Review and Comparison of Muddy Bites New Filled Cookie Cones and Waffle Cones

Updated:

Muddy Bites discreetly released Filled Cookie Cones alongside their popular Waffle Cone variants. In fact, at the time of this writing, they haven’t even appeared on their own website! The first two flavors to show up are Salted Caramel Shortbread and Hazel Cocoa Shortbread. Likely only at Target, at least according to one of the first mentions of them online, as well as where I found them—online at Target, in early-mid February, where they list them as new products.

Review & Comparison

They’re thick, much thicker than their Waffle Filled counterparts. There isn’t any false advertising here either; the cone is a thick, fairly dry, almost crumbly buttery shortbread cookie. Each sports about half a cone’s worth of their respective soft-solid filling, which is somewhat drowned out by the chunky cookie shell. This means that both the Salted Caramel and Hazelnut Cocoa filling flavors come across as more subtle.

To me, it’s still pretty tasty even though I usually would prefer something sweeter or with bolder flavors. Something about biting into that shell and the overall cone having just enough flavor and light sweetness makes for an enjoyable eating experience and good mouthfeel. Overall, both were equally tasty: the caramel wasn’t at all artificial and had an appreciable smoothness with the buttery cookie shell, and the Hazelnut Cocoa tasted mostly like milk chocolate with an essence of nuttiness–both flavors and the combination of the shortbread were an enjoyable experience!

Compared to their Waffle Filled variations, the shells here are much thicker and softer, and of course, not as crunchy. Nonetheless, notably, I found the sweetness and the flavors themselves to be on par with their cousins, which, well, I already found to be lackluster in terms of sweetness and flavor boldness already (you can see my reviews of them here).

But something about the sugar cookie part just makes these better. Sure, a downside is that it’s noticeably dry, but it tastes and feels like a genuine shortbread cookie wrapped around a pleasantly light filling. Do these even need more sugary sweetness or crazy flavors? Their Waffle Cones do, I think, but not here. It all just works well together; simply put, there isn’t a need for more sweetness. Not to mention, I liked the mouthfeel and texture here more — the softness and thickness make them so pleasant to munch through!

To conclude, these are a welcome addition to the lineup. I also suspect a lot of people may enjoy these more than their Waffle Filled version! Personally, I like these more overall. The shortbread cookie shell really makes these both unique and a great eating experience!
