David Gold vs. Bronze Protein Bars: The Choice is Easy

A review of David Bronze protein bars and a comparison to their Gold bar lineup.

Overall Review & Verdict

I got to sample two flavors: Peanut Butter Chocolate Crunch and Cookie Dough Caramel Crunch.

The Peanut Butter Chocolate Crunch features roughly equal parts of chocolate and peanut butter flavor. The taste is light, with a mild-to-moderate sweetness. It’s definitely inoffensive, and it also has a creaminess that helps smooth it out. I didn’t get anything artificial, fake, or protein-tasting — these taste and look like a mild, pleasant, candy-like bar. As a peanut fan, I am a bit disappointed, as I expected more pronounced peanut nuttiness.

The Cookie Dough Caramel Crunch has a lot more going on. It’s a little sweeter than the other bar and has a more noticeable flavor profile. The flavors represented are clearly a slightly dark chocolate, immediately followed by a cookie dough. I didn’t get any explicit caramel. Also, to note, the bar isn’t super sweet by any means and, like the other bar, is mostly inoffensive. And, again, no artificial or fake tastes here. It’s basically a good cookie-dough-flavored bar.

One big difference between the two bars is the composition and mouthfeel. The Peanut Butter Chocolate Crunch has a thick, marshmallow-like texture with just a hint of crunch. It’s not a pull-apart texture by any means; it’s more of a chewy, thicker consistency. There are also minute pockets of thin peanut butter; however, they’re too small to notice. On the other hand, the Cookie Dough Caramel Chocolate Crunch feels even thicker and chunkier; it’s harder to break off a piece, chewier, and has more noticeable, crunchier bits.

Overall, both have a good, thick, and chewy mouthfeel, but the Cookie Dough Caramel Chocolate Crunch bar takes it a step further. If I had to compare these to other bars, they don’t feel as thin and soft as Built Puff, and compared to their regular David Gold bars, there’s just no comparison: These are sweeter and more flavorful, and their texture is completely different. These are essentially different bars entirely.

Personally, I prefer these over the original Gold version by a landslide, and I think a lot of people will enjoy them if they want something not artificially flavored, pleasant, or if they’re simply picky but still want something sweet and flavorful enough. If you’re looking for something crazy, I don’t think I would suggest these, although the chewy, thick marshmallow texture is unique, at least, the way it’s done here.
