Reviewing Dr. Choq Bars, Ritter Sport with Marzipan, & More

Updated:

This snack review has Hostess Iced Devil’s Food Zingers, Dr. Choq’s White Chocolate with Mint Meringue Lime and their Milk Chocolate with Nougat bars, and Ritter Sport with Marzipan. My favorites were the Dr. Choq’s bars, especially the Mint Meringue Lime one due to its uniqueness. The most disappointing, however, was the Ritter Sport, as I expected so much more from this brand.

Hostess Iced Devil’s Food Zingers

Score: 7 / 10

Front package of Hostess Iced Devil's Food Zingers

Tastes as advertised. It’s like a decent, soft, moist piece of chocolate cake with a small layer of frosting. The taste is between semi-sweet and sweet. It’s a lot better when chilled, as it brings out that chocolate cake flavor. I wish they had been more generous with the frosting, although the dollop of cream in the middle is a nice touch.

Zingers have been around for several decades.

Ritter Sport Dark Chocolate Bar With Marzipan Filling

Score: 6 / 10

I expected more from Ritter. This was a semi-sweet, regular-quality, slightly dark chocolate that wrapped a fairly plain, soft, marzipan-tasting filling. Each chocolate bar is made up of little squares you can break off. Overall, it was a bit boring in terms of taste; I expected the quality to be a little higher and it to be sweeter.

This company dates back to 1912, and although I’m not sure when this specific variation was released, some reviews date back over a decade ago.

Dr. Choq White chocolate with Mint Meringue Lime Bar

Score: 7.5 / 10

Front package of Dr. Choq White chocolate with mint meringue lime bar.

What a unique and tasty combination! Overall, it’s a fairly sweet white chocolate bar that has just a hint of mint and a noticeable and pleasant meringue lime. All these flavors together are great; nothing is overbearing or stands out too much from the others. While nearly the entire bar is a soft white chocolate, there are a few tiny embedded bits that give it a small crisp and little bursts of flavor here and there.

There isn’t much about the company online or on social media. I found them at Ocean State Job Lot, but I haven’t seen them in any mainstream stores. You can find a previous review of their chocolate here.

Dr. Choq Milk Chocolate with Nougat Bar

Score: 7 / 10

This is almost identical to a Hershey’s Symphony bar, except with little bits of crunch here and there throughout from the nougat. The taste and texture are about the same; it’s creamy and a bit sweet. Chocolate is pretty good quality.
