Oreo Cakesters are Boring Whoopie Pies, History and a Taste Test

Updated:

Thousands of 5 star reviews… for this? A dry whoopie pie. I’m disappointed.

History

First debuting in 2007, Cakesters were discontinued in 2012. On September 30, 2021, Oreo’s social media teased the rerelease of these with a new box design as comparison.

They also partnered with the last Blockbuster, and on January 7th, 2022, they decked out the entire store with the Cakester product, offering limited edition variants. They promoted this through a video on their Facebook.

At the same time, Nutter Butter announced their comeback which happened to share a similar history to the Oreo variant,

Not long after this social media announcement, at the start of 2022, they were starting to hit store shelves and could soon be found at every store that carried the Oreo brand. The Nutter Butter, while starting alongside it, seemed to have lost steam about half way through the year, becoming seemingly unavailable both in store and online at the time of this writing. However, the Oreo Cakester remains strong.

Review

Thousands of reviews started to pour in for the Oreo Cakester across multiple store and review platforms, and it was nearly unanimous 5 stars across the board. Oreo’s advertising alongside a seemingly tasty product took the world by storm. Unfortunately, I wasn’t too impressed.

Perhaps folks are blind to their nostalgia or maybe my taste buds aren’t working. These were, on a good day, very, very average. The taste didn’t really resemble an Oreo and the texture gave it no points. In fact, I think it’s the texture is what brought it down substantially. Dry. It tried to be a creamy, moist whoopee pie but it felt as though it was put into the fridge where it’s moisture was drained. Even milk couldn’t save it, remaining firm and unimpressive.

The only thing that was moderately decent was the taste. Not as sweet as a traditional Oreo, it had a light chocolatey sweetness, although the creme in the center was nearly undetectable. At the end of the day, it was a dry whoopee pie with too much of a chocolate shell. Nothing more, nothing less.

You can find my personal Oreo ranking here.
