Review & Tier List of the Best Flavored Misfits Plant-Based Vegan Protein Bars

A review and tier list of Misfits plant-based vegan protein bars to find the best and worst tasting flavors! These include Mint Choc Chip, Brownie Batter, Cookie Butter, Peanut Butter Fudge Cookie Dough, and Caramel Fudge.

Overall Review & Verdict

Note: They reformulated their protein bar line in 2024 to be “New & Softer.” However, not all of their protein bars are labeled as such at the time of this writing. In this review, and from what I’ve seen so far, only their Brownie Batter and Peanut Butter Fudge advertise themselves as such. Furthermore, checking their website (December 2025), they only state that their Peanut Butter Fudge has been reformulated.

Something in common amongst all these is that they all have several rice-like crispies or varying crunchy pieces embedded at the top of their shells. There’s also a soft protein filling, as well as a thinner, goo-like top layer above that filling, all of which are combined on the inside. Essentially, these all have a group of nearly identical layers, resulting in a similar eating experience. The eating experience is, overall, pleasurable due to this variation.

Each flavor has a noticeable protein taste. It’s not artificial; rather, it has a powdery protein taste in a solid form. None of the bars come across as overly sweet, so what you get are more toned-down, mild flavors and more subtle sweetnesses — like a protein powder.

Overall, these are average to slightly above-average protein bars, especially for vegan options. While they all have a protein bar taste, they’re all enjoyable without being artificial or off, and they also have a pleasant mouthfeel due to their multi-layered texture. If I had to compare these to another brand, I’d say Barebells, although Barebells has softer, denser, and more fulfilling bars with a sweeter taste.

If there’s a caveat or something to consider: if you tend to shy away from protein powders specifically, you may not enjoy these, as they have a strong traditional protein powder-like taste.

Note: There are no noticeable differences between the “New & Softer” labeled bars and the non-labeled ones.

Flavor Tier List

1. Brownie Batter

Its crispy pieces on top have been replaced by dark cookie bits. The insides of this do seem to feature the same-looking thin layer of goo as the Peanut Butter Butter Fudge. Still, instead of a protein peanut inside, it’s a darker, sweet chocolate with additional similar cookie pieces. Essentially, what’s different is that this has a darker interior protein filling, and instead of peanut pieces on top, it’s just more dark cookie pieces. What results is ultimately a sweeter bar with a clear, non-bitter dark chocolate flavor. At the same time, it remains only mildly to moderately sweet (still sweeter than many on this list), with a distinct generic protein flavoring from the filling that somewhat dulls its sweetness.

2. Cookie Dough

This tastes remarkably similar to traditional protein-based cookie dough. With the same composition as the other bars on this list, the only standout is that it’s slightly sweeter than most, except for Brownie Batter. I think this sweetness allows its flavors to come out more, despite the protein taste sitting in the background. A decent cookie-dough-tasting protein bar overall.

3. Caramel Fudge

Same composition and appearance as the Cookie Butter flavor, but the primary reason this wins out is that it has a smidge increase in sweetness and a more pronounced combination of flavors: milk chocolate and light caramel. Regardless, the sweetness is still fairly low, and a protein taste seems to mask its full flavors.

4. Mint Choc Chip

The same texture as others here, but with an equal combination of milk chocolate and mint taste. Not toothpaste-y, as it’s not sweet enough for that, or for either flavor to truly stand out. Still, I don’t mind the more subtle combination, especially for a mint-based bar. Overall, this bar comes across as a smooth and enjoyable average chocolate mint.

5. Cookie Butter

Notably, slightly softer than many on this list. It’s easier to bite through as the protein filling is a little more chewy. Regardless, it also still has a similar makeup. For this flavor specifically, its appearance seems to be entirely chocolate, from the dark chocolate shell and embedded cookie pieces throughout, to the milk chocolate-looking filling. Flavor-wise, it’s a pale, semi-sweet, cookie-like dark chocolate profile, similar to the Brownie Batter flavor in some ways, but a little less dark and less sweet overall. Yeah, not much of what you may know about cookie butter here.

6. Peanut Butter Fudge

Instead of having chocolate or other crunchy bits at the top like many here, they’ve been replaced by peanuts. Further down, a milk chocolate protein filling with dark cookie pieces and the usual slim goo layer.

Overall, in terms of flavor, it has a generic, non-artificial protein peanut taste with a mild milk chocolate flavor undertone. Essentially, imagine a semi-sweet peanut powder combined with chocolate protein powder, then all blended into a protein bar. It’s decent, but its mild sweetness and overarching protein powder flavor mutes it way too much, where neither sticks out, resulting in a less than desirable dull protein bar.
