A review and flavor ranking of the Dave’s Killer Bread Amped-Up Organic Protein Bars, ranking the tastiest to the worst. The flavors include Blueberry Almond Butter, Double Chocolate Coconut, and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk.
Overall Review & Verdict
They’re all large chunky squares, and they aren’t as long lengthwise as most other bars on the market. They look like a mix of a very thick oat bar that’s been mashed and ground up. They have a smooth, dryish exterior with little embedded bits in each one. Interestingly, they also have an organic, chunky, almost bread-like appearance.
None of these tastes artificial in any sense; it’s purely organic tasting with some of the mildest sweetness I’ve ever had in a protein bar. It genuinely feels like they forgot the sugar and just added the (real) ingredients. So, if you’re into “real food” tastes, you might enjoy this.
Lastly, the textures vary slightly between each one, but for the most part, they are so chunky that they have a tough bite — almost like beef jerky, if that makes sense. You have to fight to bite through it! I also noticed that despite the embedded bits inside each one, they’re too small that the bar is pretty much entirely uniform, so don’t expect any contrasting textures or anything crazy here.
Overall, these bars are too plain, and perhaps even more importantly, the calorie-to-protein ratio isn’t great either. Anyway, going back– again, if you’re into “real tasting” foods with little flavor, try these. Otherwise, stay away, because these desperately need some sort of sweetness, more pronounced flavors, and, in my opinion, a better, softer mouthfeel that isn’t so tough.

Flavor Tier List
2. Blueberry Almond Butter
Definitely the softest on the list, yet still has a tough, lightly chewy texture. To compare, it’s a little softer than Double Chocolate Coconut but not by much.
Taste-wise, it has a super mildly sweet, authetic blueberry muffin-eske taste with a background of oat. Nothing punchy or sugary like real blueberry, just an essence of it that lends itself to a muffin-like flavor due to its oaty nature. Notably, it’s the sweetest of the bunch, and even then, that isn’t saying much!
1. Double Chocolate Coconut
This is super lightly sweet and tastes like a mix of organic oat and dark chocolate. There is some super subtle coconut, too, though; the lack of sweetness already hides most of that, making it mostly taste like a dark, organic-tasting bar. In a way, the flavor resembles an almost pure, non-bitter cocoa with a mix of plain oats. Out of the three on this list, the oaty flavor here is the strongest (but again, not very strong), and in terms of “sweetness,” it sits between the other two flavors.
Texture-wise, it’s thick, lightly chewy, and fairly difficult to bite through its hunky texture. Basically, it’s so thick that it’s actually hard to pull apart when you bite into it. It has a jerky-ish, chewy bite and is basically on the tougher side. Compared to the others on this list, it feels like the toughest and driest.
2. Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk
So super light and organic tasting, the flavors are hardly there! That supposed peanut flavor? Like a jar of organic peanut butter but with even less of a peanut taste! On top of that, the chocolate felt nearly absent too–I really had to try to even find that flavor!
This thing needs sugar and more flavor, to say the least. Essentially, this flavor is very bland, especially because of its lack of sweetness; in fact, it’s the least sweet and least flavorful of the bunch.
Texture-wise, it is thick and lightly chewy, almost tough to bite through, though, less so than the others on this list, as this also has an additional very slight crumbly mouthfeel and bite compared to the others. It doesn’t fall apart, but I did notice some parts break off more easily.
