A Review and Flavor Tier List of Walmart’s Bettergoods Crispy Protein Bars

Updated:

A review and tier list of Walmart’s Bettergoods Crispy Protein Bars, including flavors Lemon Pie, Tiramisu, and Cookies and Cream.

While I’m not sure when they released these protein bars, it may have been around as early as when the Bettergoods brand launched in April 2024. However, I only started seeing these in stores and reviewers’ posts in mid- to late 2025.

Overall Review & Verdict

Unfortunately, these plant-based protein bars don’t have the best macros I’ve seen. The calorie-to-protein ratio could be much better, especially compared to other protein and plant-based bars around.

As they advertise on the package, the filling is rice-like and crispy. Each is covered with a shell that houses it. Looks-wise, there isn’t anything too crazy about these; in fact, they look more on the boring side.

Hopefully, the flavors will be much better!

These bars are very sugary-sweet, much sweeter than your typical protein bar by a wide margin. It’s a genuine sugar taste that is appreciated in a protein-based bar. However, it does override some of the other flavors trying to be represented, especially in the Cookies and Cream and Lemon Pie-flavored bars. There’s also a hint of an artificial protein bar taste in each one, but the sweetness from these bars overrides it–is that good or bad? I don’t know.

Either way, these taste and have a mouthfeel of a crispy, reasonably thick candy bar. They’re not overly chewy or cheap-feeling–not like a Rice Krispies treat if I had to compare. It’s simply crispy, fairly dense, lightly chewy, and soft. The mouthfeel and eating experience are excellent.

Anyway, I know I was dunking on Cookies and Cream for being super sweet, but it was my favorite here. It’s so sugary and vanilla-tasting–I love it! Sure, the chocolate cookie part could have been stronger, but I just love how super creamy and extra sweet this comes out to be!

Secondly, there was the Tiramisu, which felt balanced, yet sweet enough to give it some oomph. It tasted like a more premium and nuanced chocolate protein bar.

Lastly, the Lemon Pie, while tasty, had the lemon flavor drowned out by the sugary notes, so it couldn’t be fully appreciated. I guess if you don’t want much lemon, this one could be for you.

The verdict? Walmart’s Bettergoods Crispy Protein Bars are for you if you want something extra sweet and candy-like. They’re some of the sweetest protein bars I’ve had so far, and I’d argue they’re too sweet and mask too much of the flavors they advertise–and this is coming from someone with a huge sweet tooth! At the very least, they don’t struggle with weird or artificial flavors, though, as I mentioned before, there is a hint of a protein bar taste in each one that mostly goes unnoticed due to the sweetness.

Flavor Tier List

1. Cookies and Cream

Definitely the best-looking protein bar on this list, though, nothing too spectacular in the world of protein bars. A white shell, embedded and covered with a good amount of mini chocolate chips, molds together a mildly dark, crispy filling. It’s definitely a cookies-and-cream-looking treat, to say the least! But does the flavor match?

My immediate thought is that these have a strong, sweet, creamy vanilla taste. The chocolate part isn’t as strong, though the crunchy bits do give it a cookie-like bite. It’s pretty darn sweet, which I think helps boost the vanilla and creaminess. The bar as a whole tastes like it was made with genuine sugar; however, there is an ever-so-slight protein bar taste, but the sweet, creamy vanilla overpowers it.

I wish there were a bit more chocolate flavor. It’s not a pure vanilla bar per se, there’s definitely a mild, semi-dark chocolate in the background, and the crispy part gives it a cookie vibe. So, essentially, it’s cookies and a super-sweet, creamy vanilla bar.
Lastly, just to note, the embedded chocolate chips on the outside of the bar don’t add much texture — they’re barely noticeable!

2. Tiramisu

These look fairly plain: a rectangle milk chocolate shell that covers a similar-looking brown crispy filling.

I get a pretty good rendition of a tiramisu flavor here. I feel like the coffee part of the flavor profile elevates the chocolate, making this bar as a whole taste more premium and helping put forward a more primary semi-dark flavor. And to be clear, this is definitely a chocolate tiramisu flavored bar, not mocha or coffee. The coffee flavor here isn’t pronounced or bold — not to mention the mix of the crispy part helps balance it all out and lends itself to the tiramisu tasting experience. It’s a very nuanced and precise flavor profile — I’m surprised how accurate it is!

Out of the three, this flavor is the least sweet and tastes much more balanced, yet it’s still pretty sweet overall, especially for a chocolate-based protein bar.

3. Lemon Pie

These sport a white shell that covers their yellow crispy filling.

This is a sweet, mildly creamy, sugary, lightly lemony bar. The lemon itself isn’t tarty or overly pronounced; instead, the bar leans heavily towards a very sugary taste. There’s also an ever-so-slightly protein bar flavor in the background, but the genuine sugary sweetness flavor easily overpowers it. The crispy inside at least gives you a suggestion of a pie-like taste and mouthfeel.

Overall, I wish there were more lemon and less sugar. It almost feels like I’m eating a piece of lemon candy. However, it doesn’t taste cheap in any way; it’s more just very sweet! From this, the lemon was a bit too drowned out.
