A Ranking and Review of Magic Spoon Protein Cereal Bar Treats

A ranking and review of Magic Spoon protein cereal bar treats, rating the best and worst flavors of what I’ve found so far. The flavors include Birthday Cake, Strawberry Milkshake, Chocolate PB, Double Chocolate, Blueberry Muffin, Salted Caramel, S’mores, and Marshmallow.

Most of these bars wereย releasedย in October 2023, and I found them on the Magic Spoon website in May 2025. The Salted Caramel and S’mores, however, were released in April 2025, and I got to sample them later in February 2026 after ordering from the Magic Spoon website.

Overall Review & Verdict

Are these protein bars or cereal treats? Or perhaps some version of a Rice Krispies snack? Either way, their macros are reasonable enough for them to be potentially thrown into the protein bar bucket.

These have a ton of commonalities. First, they’re all rice-based and resemble a more premium Rice Krispies treat. They’re denser, and feel more “adult” and taste less sugary than their Krispie counterparts. Between them all, they all have a creme bottom, and most have a light drizzle on top. The mouthfeel is good, and when you bite in, it feels thick and sports a light, chewy crisp.

In terms of flavor, unfortunately, I have to report that most, if not all, have a similar, slightly bitter, artificial aftertaste. It doesn’t detract too much, but it’s clearly there. I wouldn’t describe it as a “protein bar” taste or some weird, cheap-cereal flavor; it simply has just a hint of bitterness and skews the flavor profile enough to raise an eyebrow.

Of course, they’re all rice-based bars, and that also comes through. Basically, they all have that “cereal rice” taste alongside their advertised flavors. This isn’t bad, and in fact, it even elevates some of the flavor profiles, such as the S’mores. That aside, the sweetness between all of these is about the same. Not sugary sweet, it’s somewhere between mild to moderate as if they were aiming for a more adult audience. They’re sweet enough, don’t taste dull or bland, and are overall balanced.

Overall, I do wish most of the flavors came through more. Perhaps it’s because I have a big sweet tooth, but the combination of slight bitterness and more toned-down, less-than-sugary sweet flavors does make these a little less sugary than, say, Pure Protein or Barebell bars. On the sweetness protein bar scale, they’re roughly about average, maybe a step right below that.

The verdict? They’re not horrible, but they absolutely could be better. They don’t have the typical protein bar mouthfeel nor flavor, so it might be something to consider. Personally, I’d put them around the middle, maybe a little below, due to their artificial aftertaste and simply preferring the tastes and textures of actual protein bars over a cereal treat vibe.

Flavor Ranking

1. Blueberry Muffin

It definitely has the exact flavor profile of your typical, artificially flavored blueberry muffin–and I love those! The difference, however, is the sweetness and boldness of the flavors. Compared to a regular blueberry muffin, these are toned down, essentially giving the vibes and not the full experience. All the components are there; they just likely need to sweeten it up! Also, interestingly, these (and the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor) don’t taste quite as artificial or weird as many of the other Magic Spoon treats have–it’s there but not as strong, making blueberry flavoring more authetic tasting and stand out further than others on this list.

2. Chocolate Peanut Butter

It has slightly dark milk chocolate and peanut butter, but not the sweetness; it’s simply too light, especially for my tastes. Still, if you want something more subtle and enjoy peanut butter, this may very well be just for you. Also, interestingly, these (and the Blueberry Muffin flavor) don’t taste quite as artificial or weird as many of the other Magic Spoon treats have–it’s there but not as strong, making both the chocolate and peanut butter flavors more authetic tasting and stick out more.

Lastly, unfortunately, the thin layer of glaze on both the top and bottom doesn’t add enough; perhaps adding a thicker chocolate bottom may help the flavor (at least the chocolate) stand out more.

3. Salted Caramel

A smooth, mildly sweet, creamy caramel on the initial bite, followed by an artificial-ish background flavor that could throw some off. It’s like they almost had the caramel flavor, but something about it made it slightly bitter. A good chunk of the flavor was also a cereal-rice flavor, which wasn’t bad; it was just there and noticeable. Overall, I’m actually surprised by how creamy it tastes despite everything about it. It’s reasonably tasty, though that slightly bitter, artificial caramel throws me off.

Lastly, like many other Magic Spoon treats, this has a white cream bottom and white drizzle.

4. S’mores

Unlike many of the other Magic Spoon treats, this has a dark milk chocolate bottom and is loaded with several mini marshmallows scattered across the top and the bar as a whole, but no drizzle!

On the first bite, I mostly get an artificial, darker, moderately sweet milk chocolate flavor, some cereal-rice notes, and not much marshmallow. It’s a little bitter and tastes off due to an artificial, chocolate-like flavor, but honestly, it isn’t much different from a cheap chocolate you’d find in the bargain bin at your local store. I would have liked to see more of an incorporation of marshmallow, though the rice texture and taste do complement the chocolate–almost a rice-based s’more–almost!

5. Double Chocolate

Essentially, this is a regular, semi-sweet, dark-ish-tasting Rice Krispies-like bar. It could use some more sweetness, though; how chocolately it is is nice if you have that type of craving. Like the other flavors on this list, it does have a noticeable chocolate aftertaste that detracts from the overall chocolate experience. This could have been so much better, but what came out was a less-than-ideal, slightly bitter chocolate bar!

6. Strawberry Milkshake

A white layer of creme at the bottom with a drizzle covers this Rice Krispies-like treat. There are also tiny red strawberry pieces in the bar, but they aren’t too noticeable unless you look for them.

The flavor is a mild creamy strawberry with a mild to moderate sweetness. Neither the strawberry nor the sweetness is very high, and in addition, there is a noticeable artificial background flavor I can’t shake that adds an unneeded addition to the flavor profile. It’s not overtly strong, but it’s there. Other than that, it also has a cereal-rice-like taste, which I didn’t find bad; I was just disappointed by the lack of strawberry boldness due to a lack of sweetness.

7. Birthday Cake

I love the smell of these, like a sweet vanilla. Biting in, it’s a mix of a moderately sweet vanilla and an essence of birthday cake–not quite either–somewhere in the middle. Notably, however, something about it tastes artificial; in fact, at times, it felt like it stung my tongue for a second as I bit into some sweetener. It’s like they added some type of fake “birthday cake sweetener syrup” or something. Nonetheless, despite this, for some reason, it wasn’t bad, but it didn’t help either. I’m also not sure if the creme bottom or top drizzle did much, as it was on the thinner side.

8. Marshmallow

So, first, this has a marshmallow taste. However, it’s on the dull side, as the treat itself isn’t all that sweet and falls around semi-sweet. It’s also somewhat overshadowed by the artificial, almost protein-bar-like taste (those who are familiar with protein bars will understand). Basically, it needs more sweetness and to tone down that artificialness for it to be really worth considering, especially when the other Magic Spoon Treats are out there and simply better tasting.

Honestly, just give me a Rice Krispies treat!
