Ranked: Who Makes the Best Birthday Cake Protein Bar?

Ranking and reviewing the best birthday cake flavored protein bars from brands like Quest, David, Barebells, and more.

Protein Bar Brand Ranking

1. Pure Protein

Birthday Cake is my favorite flavor of Pure Protein bars, genuinely reminding me of how it feels like they tried baking some cake parts into the traditional Pure Protein bar center. It’s got a thick white shell and a dense yellow cake center, plus crunchy, noticeable sprinkles across the bar. For me, I love the texture and mouthfeel compared to many other Pure Protein bars!

Is it birthycake flavored though? Not really, but it’s not pure vanilla either. It’s somewhere in the middle. This bar is sweeter than the average Pure Protein bar and doesn’t have much of an off-taste, either. Basically, you can definitely appreciate this as a solid vanilla and a birthday cake bar.

2. JUNKLESS

This flavor looks kind of crazy! A large amount of colorful, substantial little sprinkle beads layers both the top and sides of this bar. Inside, it’s a yellowish-orange color with white chips embedded throughout—definitely the most colorful and, in my opinion, the best-looking of this bunch.

It’s fairly sweet, not over the top, but sweet, especially compared to other JUNKLESS bars. The taste is a candy-like mix of vanilla birthday cake, which was surprising because birthday cake-flavored treats often don’t actually taste like it. I also believe there is a hint of protein bar-tasting filling, but it’s barely noticeable due to the sweetness and bold vanilla birthday-cake-like flavors, which is great!

Also, as a side note, those sprinkles are very crunchy and add such a great contrast to the soft filling! They were generous with them, and it paid off!

3. Prime Bites (Brownie)

The sweetest of the Prime Bites Brownie bunch and one of the most genuinely flavored. It’s like they put that artificial, sweet, birthday cake frosting you find on cheap cakes at the grocery store into a brownie. Is it quite as punchy? Not necessarily, but it’s strong enough and accurate to be well appreciated. And if I had to nitpick, it doesn’t perfectly match its sugar-based frosting counterpart; there is an artificial light sweetener-like taste instead of full-on “normal” sugar–honestly, though, it’s ignorable; when was the last time you had birthday cake and didn’t get any artificial flavors?

In terms of its composition, it has little bits of colorful pieces that don’t add anything aside from looks. Also, it’s just a tad stiffer than some other Prime Bites Brownies, but it still retains the same dense and soft form.

But really, what stands out is that this is the sweetest Prime Bites Brownie and tastes like you made a birthday cake frosting made mostly with a sweetener, not a “real” sugar. Definitely tasty and a near replica of what it portrays. This is for you, especially if you want something sweet and representative of authentic birthday cake flavors.

4. Barebells

An all-white bar with funfetti-looking pieces embedded on the inside, with the usual crispy pieces out. It’s a distinct artificial vanilla, not so much birthday cake, though for whatever reason the artificialness doesn’t drag it–birthday cake is usually artificial after all. It’s sweeter than most other Barebells bars, which accentuates the vanilla flavor. It’s a bit creamy too, though, again, more aiming for a sweet, artificial vanilla flavor. I would have labeled this a vanilla protein bar instead of Birthday Cake.

5. ONE

A noticeably thin white chocolate shell with tiny colored pieces on top. Honestly, the shell here was so thin that you could see the inside filling. The inside has the usual dense protein filling. What you get from this is a complete, uninteresting uniform texture.

What especially doesn’t help is the fact that, despite this being a birthday cake flavor, it’s just not sweet enough. This is a birthday cake after all! And while it is mildly sweet, the flavor is an authentic birthday vanilla taste, so I will give it credit there. It’s just disappointing that as someone who loves birthday cake flavor protein bars, it falls so short due to its ultra tame sweetness and flavor, as well as boring mouthfeel from the equally boring texture–like, at least include sprinkles that are actually crunchy!

6. Quest

I don’t know why, but I found it really cool that this entire bar, from the outside to the inside, is ghostly white. Similarly, the flavor is uniform too: a moderately sweet vanilla white chocolate-esque from the shell to the center, however, with some noticeable artificialness. It’s not enough to throw it off too much, but it’s clearly there and does detract from the flavor somewhat.

Birthday cake, though? As I said, not quite. This bar’s taste reminds me of a white chocolate candy bar, which is something many companies fall into—they advertise “birthday cake,” but it’s instead either a sweet vanilla or white chocolate. Still, it’s tasty despite the mismatched flavors and artificialness; I personally like it, especially the creamy shell and how semi-thick it all is.

7. Dive Bar Nutrition

Okay, this is called “Divorce Cake,” but that’s close enough, right?

These look pretty cool! Not only are there confetti-looking pieces, but solidified string-like pieces are also ingrained in these—icing, maybe?!

First off, interestingly, these are the least sweet of many of the Dive Bar Nutrition bars, yet they still fall on the sweeter side. It’s a clear vanilla; however, I’m not sure I’d call it cake-flavored; it’s simply a smooth, sugary vanilla that’s pleasantly tasty. Yes, smooth and sweet at the same time! Nonetheless, I am disappointed that it’s not explicitly cake- or birthday-cake-flavored.

Lastly, those strings of icing do add a mild contrast, providing a small addition to the already chewy bar. They give you a milder chewiness and a thicker feeling when you hit them, which, to be clear, while not a huge addition, is a nice touch.

8. Promix (Puff Bars)

Well, it has a few colorful sprinkles in it, so it must be a birthday cake, right? Well, sort of. Its flavor is about as typical as vanilla-birthday-cake flavor gets. The bar as a whole is about moderately sweet, though it could use more since it’s supposed to be birthday cake. Going back, it doesn’t exactly nail the birthday cake flavor, but it isn’t explicitly vanilla either; it’s somewhere in between, which I think would be good enough for people seeking birthday cake flavor.

9. David

Technically, the flavor is “Cake Batter,” but that’s more or less the same thing, right?

It looks like a uniform white bar–smooth white shell and inside, biting in, a white filling with a small crunch and chewiness, easy to bite through, reasonably dense. It’s average. Taste-wise, it’s lightly sweet, with an authentic vanilla birthday cake flavor, but it’s not sweet enough to bring it out. For the most part, it’s quite bland, though the composition and mouthfeel are pleasant and unoffensive, offering a lightly, non-standout, balanced chewiness and crispness.

10. Prime Bites (Muffins)

Definitely very pretty, with embedded melted color sprinkles and a slightly thicker drizzle than the other Prime Bites Muffins, which also provides a slight contrast and a smidge more sweetness to its texture. The taste is a mild to moderate, slightly artificial vanilla flavor and a hint of birthday cake. It’s slightly sweeter than many of the other Prime Bites Muffins.

This is just a tame vanilla-like muffin that needs more sweetness and authetic birthday cake flavor to really get it going.

11. Magic Spoon (Protein Cereal Bar)

I love the smell of these, like a sweet vanilla. Biting in, it’s a mix of a moderately sweet vanilla and an essence of birthday cake–not quite either–somewhere in the middle. Notably, however, something about it tastes artificial; in fact, at times, it felt like it stung my tongue for a second as I bit into some sweetener. It’s like they added some type of fake “birthday cake sweetener syrup” or something. Nonetheless, despite this, for some reason, it wasn’t bad, but it didn’t help either. I’m also not sure if the creme bottom or top drizzle did much, as it was on the thinner side.

12. Legendary Foods (Protein Pastry)

This is so pretty! Pink frosting on top, with a thick inner layer of pink frosting! It contrasts nicely with the off-white pastry. And maybe it was just me, the filling looked a little more generous compared to several other Legendary Foods Protein Pastrys.

Looks aside, if I had to guess, I’d point to an artificial, bitterish, plain sugary vanilla-tasting flavor. It’s definitely not birthday cake and only flirts with vanilla — it’s mostly a fake-tasting sugar pastry. Not terrible by any means, but if you’re expecting a super sweet birthday cake or flavorful vanilla, this isn’t really it.

After heating them up, some bitterness remained, though a bit more sugary vanilla emerged, making it more enjoyable in both flavor and texture.
