Review
These are all exceptionally tasty and absolutely comparable to their “normal”, sugar and carb-based versions. The flavors are authetic and don’t give you that weird or off “sweetener” taste, and their textures are more than creamy enough that you won’t notice much of any difference. No iciness—none of that! And if you’re worried about them being too sweet—nope, these are more or less your average-sugary-tasting ice creams.
My personal favorite of the bunch is the Rocky Road, followed by Brownie a la Mode and Peanut Butter. In last place (but still yummy) are Neapolitan, followed by Vanilla.
Rocky Road leans more towards a nutty milk-chocolate flavor, and unfortunately, I don’t get much marshmallow from it despite the white-appearing swirls. Also, its packaging definitely shows it has a lot more than it actually does—those swirls are actually pretty thin! Though, don’t get me wrong, there are almost enough—quite large, actually—crunchy, chocolate-looking pieces that add an extra chocolate and nutty flavor, which compensates for any of its downfalls. Still, while it’s a very good and reasonably loaded ice cream, I’d absolutely want more marshmallow flavor, please!
Brownie a la Mode, my second favorite here, is vanilla-based but still has a good amount of fudgy swirls that give it an aprecitable chocolate taste. It looks reasonably packed and appears to include various flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla, and embedded brownie bits. Also, while the brownie bits are far and few in between, and very small, they pack a tiny, noticeable punch! When you hit a few, it’s nice—they’re small and chewy and add to the contrast with the ice cream. Then, on top of all that, the fudgy swirls and vanilla ice cream enhance the overall taste and experience.
Tied for second is Peanut Butter—and I have a lot to say here as a peanut fan, so get ready…
Immediately upon opening, I noticed the large chunk-looking, peanut-like swirls embedded in this darker chocolate ice cream. However, spooning through, I do notice they’re thin and provide a very, very thin crunch, which is at least a nice contrast to the ice cream. Don’t get me wrong, though; this might be a good thing because the ice cream contains a very large number of these swirls throughout, so when you scoop through it, you can literally hear cracking! It’s really interesting, and since there’s so much of it, it provides a really good mouthfeel and spoon experience.
In terms of taste, it’s a little darker than your regular milk chocolate and has a good amount of peanut butter. They’re balanced, and it comes across as both pleasant and dessert-y. It’s not overly sweet by any means, the peanut isn’t too nutty, and the chocolate isn’t too dark or bitter either. It’s a very well-balanced, mildly dark peanut ice cream that’s reasonably sweet. It’s pleasant and smooth, and, personally, as a peanut butter lover, this ice cream does hit the spot. On the other hand, and nitpicking, I do wish it were a smidge sweeter or perhaps had both the chocolate and peanut flavors elevated just a hair. Again, nitpicking. I think most, if not all, people would really enjoy this ice cream for its flavor and the generous amount of lightly crunchy peanut swirls.
Lastly, the other flavors here, Neapolitan and Vanilla, are perfectly represented. Nothing stands out, just your ordinary, traditionally flavored plain ice creams you could find in other brands. Not too sweet, nothing too strong, just generic ice creams that, in my opinion, could use some toppings and mixins as they already provide a good enough base.
As a side note, I don’t really see a huge difference between the Carb Smart and No Sugar Added variants in terms of texture, taste, or composition. One may be ever so slightly creamier and perhaps a smidge sweeter than the other (see the nutrition facts), but it’s really a toss-up. Honestly, you won’t really notice or care about the differences.
